The post positions for the 2012 Belmont were recently announced, as well as updated odds for the field of contenders in this latest horse race. I’ll Have Another will be seeing a historic third straight victory at the race to be named thorough bread racing’s first Triple Crown since the late ’70s and Affirmed.
Twelve horses will compete in the upcoming race, with the Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner, I’ll Have Another, at the #11 spot. Other familiar names in the race include Union Rags, a heavy favorite from the Derby, at the #3 spot, and fellow Derby competitor Dullahan at the #5 spot. Optimizer will be at the #10 spot and was trained by the well-known D. Wayne Lukas. All of the Belmont post positions can be viewed via Chicago Tribune’s report.
The noticeable omission from the list of twelve will be the Bob Baffert-trained Bodemeister, who was winning the previous two races, until a certain other horse surged ahead at the finish. In this race, Baffert has Paynter, which has the #9 spot and is ridden by jockey Mike Smith.
The latest available odds and betting lines for the race still favor I’ll Have Another with 4 to 5 odds to win this race, meaning it could be a historic victory. Next in line is Dullahan at 5 to 1 and Union Rags at 6 to 1. Since both horses were in the Kentucky Derby, they may give the favorite a run for his money at the next race. Full odds can be seen at the Des Moines Register article.
This should be an exciting race coming up, but it will remain to be seen if a horse can finally win the Triple Crown after decades without a winner. Will I’ll Have Another “have another win,” or will another horse else come away with the upset?
